Programmable Thermostats

A programmable thermostat is a combined timer and temperature-sensitive switch that can help you conserve energy and save money at the same time. It permits you to change the temperature in your home depending on whether you are home or away. Programmable thermostats have separate weekday and weekend programs that allow you to store and repeat up to four customized temperature settings daily. Some models have a “hold” or “manual override” feature that enables you to change a setting without deleting the daily or weekly program.

During the winter, programming your thermostat on 68° - 70°F when you are home or awake, and setting it back to 65°F while you are away or asleep will reduce fuel consumption. Likewise, during the summer, you can achieve similar results by setting your thermostat on 75°F while you are home and awake, and at 80° - 82°F when you are away or asleep. Although making these adjustments manually is simple and effective, it is easy to forget. A programmable thermostat ensures the adjustments are made daily.

When shopping for a programmable thermostat, take the brand name and model number of your present thermostat with you to ensure that your new thermostat will be compatible with your current electrical requirements. Choose a model that is easy to program. You won’t save money unless you use it.
