Shopping for Savings
When shopping for a programmable thermostat,
these are some features to consider:
- Is there a battery backup for the unit’s
clock?
- What type of recovery system does it have?
Conventional recovery means heating or cooling begin at
the time selected. Pre-comfort recovery
means the heating or cooling system will recover
gradually as it adjusts from an energy saving setting to
a comfort setting.
- Does it have a "hold" or "manual
override" feature to allow greater flexibility?
- Does it meet the Energy Star
requirements? Once you have selected the programmable
thermostat that best suits your needs, install it in a
location that will enhance its performance. Whether you hire a contractor, or
"do-it-yourself," consider selecting a site that is convenient and
away from direct sunlight, doorways, skylights, and windows.
