Humidity...

Heat is perceived as a combination of temperature and humidity, and "controlling" the humidity affects how comfortable you "feel". In the winter, adding humidity to dry, heated air will allow you to set your thermostat lower, resulting in a decrease in energy usage and lower utility bills.

Adding humidity during the heating season benefits both you and your home. It helps to prevent dry skin, makes breathing easier, and leaves you less susceptible to sore throats and colds. Adding humidity also prevents dry, heated air from causing the frames around doors and windows to shrink and break the weather tight seal that prevents warm air from escaping. Warm, dry air may also cause wood furniture and interior wood trim to splinter and crack. It also promotes the generation of static electricity.

During the cooling season, a properly sized air conditioner helps to remove excess humidity from warm, moist air, allowing you to feel comfortable when keeping your thermostat at a higher setting. Because most of the humidity generated inside your home comes from bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms, running an exhaust fan in these areas just long enough to remove the moist air can help you maintain your comfort setpoint.
