Window Glazing
Until recent years, clear glass was
the glazing material of choice. Now there are several types of
special glazing that help control heat loss and condensation.
- Low emissivity or low-e glass has a special coating to
reduce heat transfer back through the window. These coatings
reflect 40% to 70% of the heat that is normally transmitted
through clear glass while allowing the full amount of light to
pass through.
- Heat absorbing glass has special tints that allow it
to absorb as much as 45% of the incoming solar energy to reduce
heat gains.
- Reflective glass has been coated with a reflective
film to reduce the passage of light. During the summer, it aids in
controlling solar heat.
- Plastic glazing materials are another alternative, but
they tend to be less durable.
