Know When to Use a Fire Extinguisher
Use a fire extinguisher only when all of the
following are true:
- Your extinguisher is rated for the type of fire you are
fighting and is in good working order.
- Everyone has left the building.
- The fire department has been called.
- The fire is small and confined to the immediate area where it
started.
- You can fight the fire with your back to a safe escape route.
- The extinguisher is large enough to put out the fire.
- You know how to use a fire extinguisher and can operate it
effectively.
Remember, if you have any doubt about
whether or not to fight the fire - DON’T. Leave the building
closing the door behind you to slow the spread of the fire. Follow
your fire escape plan, and leave the
rest to the professional fire
fighters.
