Energy Star Program
 |
Because of concern over air pollution and increasing energy usage,
the Department of Energy (DOE) together with the Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA) developed the Energy Star program. The
Energy Star logo was born to provide a simple, instantly recognizable
symbol that allows consumers to differentiate high-efficiency
equipment that saves them money and simultaneously helps the environment.
Wasting energy to heat and cool your home not only wastes your
money, but also contributes to the air pollution problems such
as smog, acid rain and global warming.
It is true that higher efficiency equipment
is more expensive than standard efficiency equipment. You may
think that Energy Star rated equipment is out of your budget.
By the time you figure in your monthly utility savings resulting
from installing higher efficiency equipment, the higher efficiency
equipment becomes very affordable. Knowing that you are doing
your part to help the environment is a bonus that will benefit
many folks for years to come.
Keep in mind that the most important part of purchasing new heating
and cooling equipment is to
have the equipment properly sized for the home. The significance
of this point cannot be emphasized enough and your contractor
should discuss this with you. Ensuring proper sizing now, will
help you keep your cool later on.
Look for the Energy Star label and feel good about your
decision.
