Tips on Choosing a Contractor
- Referrals from satisfied friends and relatives are a good source when choosing a contractor. Also keep in mind that local contractors are generally less expensive.
- A contractor should visit your home for an on-site evaluation before bidding on the job. Getting three written estimates will make comparisons easier.
- Make sure any contractor is properly licensed and carries an adequate amount of liability insurance.
- Once you have narrowed your selection, ask the contractor for references. You should also call the Better Business Bureau and check for any complaints against him. If a bid is too low, be cautious.
- Make sure the contract contains beginning and completion dates for your project. This will avoid unnecessary delays and long periods of time lapsing between days the contractor shows up to work.
- Decide in advance who is responsible for providing permits if they are necessary.
- Consumer protection laws in Pennsylvania allow you to cancel a contract before midnight on the third business day after you signed it.
