Tips on Carbon Monoxide
- The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends installing at least one carbon monoxide (CO) detector with an audible warning signal in the hallway near the bedrooms or sleeping areas so it will awaken you if it goes off while you are asleep.
- The International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) also recommends additional detectors be located on each level of the home providing you and your family that extra protection.
- Choose CO detectors that are Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) listed which sound an audible warning. The UL logo will be displayed on the package.
- Install CO detectors at least 15 feet away from combustion type appliances/equipment such as the gas range, hot water heater, furnace, etc.
- Do not install a CO detector in areas with high humidity or where it will be exposed to strong chemical solvents, cleaners, paint, diaper pails, or fluorescent lights.
- If you have a plug-in detector, do not install it in an outlet controlled by a light switch, as it could be accidentally turned off.
- Be sure to keep your CO detector clean and free of grease, soot and dirt. Clean with a damp cloth (no chemical cleansers).
- Test your detector regularly.
- Most importantly, follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.
