Tips on Windows
  • Window shades, movable shutters, and insulated draperies can all be used to reduce heat loss in winter and heat gain in the summer.

  • Window energy efficiency is also measured in terms of U-value, or its ability to conduct heat. If a window’s U-value is low, it will lose less heat. U values typically range from 1.1 to 0.3, with 0.3 representing the most efficient rating and the lowest amount of heat loss.

  • When comparing R-values, make sure the R-value is calculated on the entire window and not just through the center of the glass.

  • Retrofit low-e films are available for "do-it-yourself" installation.

  • Heat absorbing glass does not have a mirror-like appearance because it reflects only a small percentage of light.
