Tips on Window Treatments
- Installing storm windows over single-pane windows can increase the R-value and help to reduce drafts, water condensation and frost formation.
- During the heating season, maximize the warming effects of solar heat by opening draperies and shades on your south-facing windows to allow the sunlight to enter. Close them at night to retain the heat.
- During the cooling season, keep window coverings closed during the day to reduce heat gain.
- Consider purchasing insulated draperies. They can be closed at night to retain heat during the winter, and closed during the day to prevent heat gain during the summer.
- Awnings are a shading option that can help reduce summer heat gain.
- Draperies can be an effective insulator when they cover the entire surface of the window. They should be lined, made of a heavier material, and hang completely to the floor. Draperies should also extend beyond the top and sides of the window. To provide even more insulation, consider adding a valance.
