Tips on Water Heating
- Water heating is the third largest energy expense in your home. It typically accounts for about 14% of your utility bill. Reduce your hot water expense by lowering the thermostat on your water heater and
by washing clothes in cold water whenever possible.
- Repairing leaking faucets and showers can save hot water. A leak of one drip per second can cost $1 per month!
- The average dishwasher requires a water temperature of 140°F for optimum cleaning. You can save energy by purchasing a dishwasher that has a "booster heater," and then setting your tank at 120°F. Reducing the water temperature is not advisable if the dishwasher does not have a booster heater.
- Insulate the pipes that carry the hot water from the water heater whenever possible. This will reduce heat loss as the water travels to the faucet.
- Prior to leaving for vacation, turn the water heater down to "vacation" or the lowest setting possible.
