Tips on Smoke Detectors
  • Install a minimum of two smoke detectors, even in single level homes.

  • Install a smoke detector inside each bedroom as well as in the main corridor outside each bedroom area.

  • Install a smoke detector above the stairwells.

  • Mount the smoke detector on the ceiling in the center of the room.

  • Install new batteries in all smoke detectors at least once a year (except the 10-year Lithium battery smoke detector) at the same time. A good time to change the batteries is in the spring when daylight savings time begins.

  • Never remove the battery except when replacing it with a fresh battery.

  • Replace all batteries immediately upon moving into a new home.

  • Test units monthly, in accordance with NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm Code. Test the units using the test button or an approved smoke substitute, and clean the units in accordance with the manufacturers’ instructions. Do not use an open-flame device for testing.

  • Smoke detectors need to be replaced every 10 years. How old are the smoke detectors in your home?

  • Most importantly, follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully.
