Tips on Insulation
  • A well-insulated attic should always be properly ventilated to prevent moisture from accumulating.

  • Do not cover attic vents with insulation.

  • Do not hand-pack insulation around bare stovepipes, electrical fixtures, motors, or any heat-producing equipment such as recessed lighting. Fixtures such as these could cause heat to build up and become a fire hazard.

  • Some new homes are built with metal frames instead of wood. Even if you install the recommended level of insulation, you may not get the same performance as you would if you were insulating a structure with a wooden frame. Ask your builder to provide thermal breaks for steel studding.

  • Insulation acts as a sound barrier to help keep indoor noise levels down.

  • When installing layers of insulating materials, keep in mind that the insulation on the bottom will not deliver its full R-value if it is "compressed" by the weight of the material on top.
